The CMMC framework includes a comprehensive and scalable certification element to verify the implementation of practices associated with creating a cybersecurity maturity level. CMMC is designed to provide increased assurance to the Department of Defense that a DIB firm can adequately protect sensitive unclassified information, accounting for information flow down to subcontractors in a multi-tier supply chain.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies estimates that cybercrime costs the world nearly $600 billion annually or about one percent of global gross domestic product. The forecast of annual losses has expanded since the 2014 study, with a global revenue loss totaling approximately $445 billion—[Ref: "No Slowing Down in Cybersecurity" in February 2021
